Pre-Emergent Application of Fertilizer and Weed Control
If you’re new to the world of pre-emergent application, it’s a process that prevents grassy weeds and broadleaf weeds from entering your lawn – this application is especially targeted at preventing crabgrass and dandelions. During the process, we also put down a micronutrient blend called “armament,” (which is a biodegradable nutrient enhancer), as well as urea nitrogen to achieve that stunning, vibrant green color.
If you’re looking for more details on the timing of this process, how it works, and more — read on!
What is the process, and when does this happen?
The application consists of the defender dimension combo (as well as the treatments mentioned above), which has performed wonders from the time we first started using it. This process will occur during the months of March, April, and May (weather dependent). As a result, you will see almost no dandelions begin to sprout, and the application also prevents crabgrass from entering the lawn. This process will set up your lawn for future fertilizer treatment, which you can read more about here.
How do pre-emergents work? Are they safe?
Basically, the herbicides in a pre-emergent treatment application work to create a barrier of vapor which destroys weeds before they are germinated. Pre-emergents will often come in granular form and are mixed with fertilizer prior to application.
These herbicides are rated as safe for people and pets as long as they are applied correctly and access to that area is restricted until dry after application. Here at MGR Services, we ensure these processes are completed with care and expertise, and that clear directions for restriction times are provided to our customers. The pre-emergents that we use are all liquid applied and homeowners and pets should stay clear of these areas until the application is dry. Drying time is typically two to four hours depending on the weather — once dry, you and your pets are welcome to frolic in the grass as you like!
Do I really need this for my lawn? Why can’t I just put fertilizer down?
The pre-emergent application helps deter and destroy new weeds that could possibly be lurking in your soil. It’s imperative that this process is completed before the weed seeds germinate so the barrier is in place. The early application can also help control young weeds that haven't yet begun to actively grow. One big advantage of our program, which differs from that of our competition, is that we use both a grassy weed pre-emergent and a broadleaf pre-emergent. This allows us to use less than half the normal amount of weed killer over the entire year compared to our competition!
We strongly believe that this application is the most important one of the entire year. It sets your lawn up for a beautiful season and prevents the need for those tiring, time-consuming (not to mention hot and sweaty!) weed pulling days. The pre-emergent application ensures that your lawn is given a chance to bloom unhindered by those pesky weeds and be its best lush, green self for the spring and summer seasons!
